Alesi about Verstappen in Imola: “Red Bull was lucky to go in the right direction”

Max Verstappen dominated the F1 Grand Prix in Imola with Red Bull last weekend, but according to Jean Alesi the weekend gives a skewed picture of reality.

Verstappen took pole position on Friday in Imola, won the sprint race on Saturday and then also beat everything and everyone on Sunday during the Grand Prix. A 100% score for Verstappen, who saw his team bring updates to Imola last weekend. According to Alesi, however, it is difficult to assess these updates now.

Imola gives a skewed picture

Opposite Corriere della Sera Alesi, who used to drive for Ferrari, says the weather in Imola was an advantage for Red Bull. “At Imola, with the sprint race and the difficult weather conditions, it was impossible to understand how best to set up the cars. Red Bull, with a bit of luck, immediately went in the right direction. With three practice sessions and normal conditions I don’t know if It ended like last Sunday.”

Leclerc makes a mistake

Alesi also saw that Leclerc, dominant at the top of the championship until the weekend in Imola, made a mistake from P3 in the closing phase of the race. This cost him seven points. Points that according to Alesi are expensive, but according to the former driver it is understandable that Leclerc went full for P2. “Leclerc desperately tried to pass Sergio Perez and had to minimize the disadvantage by exiting that chicane with too much speed. He made a mistake, but Leclerc is fighting for the world championship. It showed in the fact that he did everything to secure second place.”
