Former McGill Redbirds Star Benjamin Labrosse Receives Invite to New York Giants Rookie Mini-Camp

Former McGill Redbirds defensive back Benjamin Labrosse has earned an invitation to the New York Giants’ rookie mini-camp.

This is what he indicated on his social networks on Sunday.

Labrosse is considered one of the top prospects for the upcoming Canadian Football League (CFL) draft. This will take place next Tuesday, and it will be interesting to see if the invitation from the NFL team will have an impact on its selection rank.

Labrosse was impressive during the most recent CFL evaluation camp, notably finishing first in the 40-yard dash (4.51 seconds) and long jump (11 ft 1 in 3⁄4) tests. .

A winding journey

The native of Greenfield Park has had a rather unusual journey. After winning the title of Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the First Collegiate Division with the Cégep Vanier Cheetahs in 2018, he made the jump to the NCAA with the Syracuse Orange.

Labrosse had a good first year with our neighbors to the south in 2020, but decided to leave the program after just one game in 2021. He recently indicated that he made this decision due to a lack of playing time.

“There were several reasons why I didn’t stay with the Orange, but ultimately I just didn’t feel like it was the right place for me,” Labrosse told 3DownNation. I was a little more in my head at that time and I didn’t have the playing time I wanted. It was the first time I faced adversity. Looking back, I should have persevered.”

Only one season at McGill

Labrosse therefore decided to return to Quebec, where he enlisted with the Redbirds. He made 35 tackles and three interceptions in eight games with McGill in 2022, the year he was the only member of his team named to the first all-Canadian team.

However, Labrosse was not back with McGill in 2023 and therefore has not played football since the game against the Université de Montréal Carabins on October 29, 2022.

“I won’t go into details, but it was related to school,” Labrosse said. I wasn’t very interested in what they signed me up for. Ultimately my goal was just to play professional football, so I decided to take a season off and train rather than taking mostly night classes that didn’t interest me.”

Despite all that, the Giants saw something in him and so will a CFL team during Tuesday’s draft. During his rebounding college career, he proved he could wreak havoc as a cornerback or safety, in addition to being a threat on special teams. We are talking here about a versatility that makes professional recruiters dream.
