Golf: Greg Norman accuses the PGA of pressure on players tempted by the Super League

Australian golf star Greg Norman accuses PGA Tour officials of pressuring his players to prevent them from joining a Super League project, partly funded by Saudi Arabia, the American sports site said on Thursday. , ESPN.

In a letter to PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan, quoted by ESPN, Mr. Norman, one of the main players in this new league project, accuses the organization of “going too far” and of being “unfair” by threatening excluding players if they were to join the Super League.

“Put simply, you can’t ban players who want to play golf. Players have the right and freedom to play wherever they want,” writes Greg Norman according to ESPN. “I know a lot of players are or were interested in playing for a new league, in addition to playing for the (PGA) tour, where is the problem? he wonders.

The Super League, due to launch this year with 14 competitions, hopes to attract big players with the promise of lucrative winnings. But several big names in golf, including number one Spaniard Jon Rahm, Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and American stars Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau, have decided to steer clear.

On the other hand, the Americans Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler joined the favorable opinion of the winner of six Grand Slam tournaments, Phil Mickelson. The latter had indicated last week that he wanted to join the Saudi-funded Super League of golf, despite accusations of human rights violations against them, to force the PGA Tour to “reshape its operation”.

He then apologized, which did not prevent him from losing his long-time sponsor, the auditing firm KPMG.
