Since the end of last year, the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC) has called on athletes to avoid being in public places in order to reduce the risk of infection. There are several cases of Covid-19 among those who attend the Olympics every day in Beijing, but at least so far no foreign athlete or coach has received a positive test result.
Olympians restrict contacts before going to Beijing
Two weeks ago, Martin Dukur won the 11th World Cup in the skeleton. Before traveling to the Fifth Olympics in his career, Martin was especially careful to avoid getting infected with the virus by limiting contact even with his family.
16-year-old cross-country skier Estere Wolf, who is still in high school, will make her debut at the Olympics. She also tried to avoid contact, including during training. Wolf has not been to school since December, subordinating his daily routine to the Olympic start.
Already at the beginning of the week, the head of the Latvian Olympic team (LOV) and chief doctor Līga Cīrule arrived in China to get acquainted with the venue and security formalities. Cīrule told Latvian Radio that
conditions for participants in the Beijing Games are very good.
“Everyone lives in one or two rooms, the beds are special, equipped with technology – you can lift your head, legs as you want. Even the curtains do not have to be opened by hand, you can press a button and close,” said Cīrule. “We have very good impressions. The whole area is also very tidy and everything is very beautiful.”
However, in order to arrive at living conditions, athletes must have a negative covid test on arrival at the Olympic venue. The doctor of each team in the Latvian delegation monitors the health of the athletes, Cīrule pointed out. Athletes were advised not to visit public places unnecessarily, and athletes’ families were also tested for covids.
“I think that [skeletonists] Thomas Dukur lived in a hotel, “said Cīrule.” In principle, everyone [sportisti] until the last one was in training camps and the sled athletes were in the World Cup, they were actually at home one day [pirms braukšanas uz Pekinu].”
Meanwhile, the team of the Swedish championship “Örebro”, represented by Rodrigo Ābol, the striker of the Latvian Olympic hockey team, has not played since January 8 due to the outbreak. In a conversation with Latvijas Radio, the hockey player admitted that the team is scheduled to play on Thursday after a 19-day break. In Sweden, epidemiological regulations are not as strict as in Latvia, for example, stores do not have to show a vaccination certificate and do not use a face mask. However
When visiting public places, Apple is cautious and does not walk around unnecessarily.
“The last two years have been such a difficult life. I won’t say the last time I ate at a restaurant, I don’t remember,” said Apple. “I try to avoid visiting unnecessary places. For example, I haven’t been to the cinema for years.
Among those attending the Beijing Winter Olympics in Beijing in January, Covid-19 analyzes found more than 100 positive cases, mostly among partners, including staff, representatives of international sports federations and journalists. In the Beijing Olympic Bubble, athletes and gaming staff must undergo a daily polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test with a swab from the nose and throat.
