An unusual story experienced by Chelsea. The Blues want to recall Emerson Palmieri from a loan spell to Lyon, but must pay compensation if they want to make the ‘transfer’ smooth.
As reported by the Daily Mail and also reports from journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea want to bring Emerson back to Stamford Bridge because of the loss of Ben Chilwell who must be out until the end of the season with a knee injury.
Given that Marcos Alonso’s only left back is left, Chelsea has moved to ask Lyon to repatriate Emerson. But it’s not as easy as turning the palm of the hand.
Chelsea’s desire was hampered by a clause in Emerson’s loan agreement, in which Lyon had the option to make his status permanent at the end of the season. Lyon has even rejected applications from Chelsea twice.
So Chelsea had to compromise to be able to pull back Emerson. They are ready to pay a compensation fee of around 4 million Euros to Lyon.
It remains to be seen whether Lyon will accept it, but Chelsea have prepared a ‘plan B’ if this proposal does not materialize. One thing is clear, Emerson is still a top priority for manager Thomas Tuchel who does not want to buy new players.

This also makes Chelsea less likely to sign Lucas Digne from Everton. The Toffees asked for a permanent purchase, while Chelsea only wanted to borrow.
Emerson was only on loan at Lyon last summer, about a month after winning Euro 2020 with Italy. He did not compete in the Chelsea left back sector during Tuchel’s care.
During the 2020/21 season, Emerson made just 15 appearances in all competitions, and only twice in the Premier League. Italian coach Roberto Mancini’s request that he want him to play regularly at club level finally materialized when he moved to the French League.
