Carolina Marín will return on March 8 in Germany after more than 9 months of absence

Carolina Marín’s return to competition already has a date and place: on March 8 at the German Open that takes place in the town of Muelheim an der Ruhr. It will be the end of a long road of more than 9 months which has deprived the Huelva champion of participating, among other events, in the Tokyo Olympics and in the Absolute World Championship that was held in Huelva last month.

Carolina planned to reappear on March 1 at the Spain Masters which was going to be played at the Palacio de los Deportes de Huelva that bears his name, but the tournament has been cancelled.

The German Open, in the Super 300 category (medium level) will be a good touchstone for one of the ‘greats’ of the World Tour, the All England (Super 1000 category) that will take place in Birmingham the following week (as of March 16). Pablo Abián (Recreativo IES La Orden), Beatriz Corrales, Luis Enrique Peñalver and Clara Azurmendi are also registered in German lands.

The Olympic, world and European champion will close an intense month of March with the Swiss Open in Basel (Super 300), before returning to compete in Asian lands.

Carolina noticed some discomfort during training at the end of May; underwent initial tests which confirmed that the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee was damaged. However, he was waiting for his injury to be analyzed in depth in later days.

“After the tests carried out over the weekend and the consultation with the doctors, It has been confirmed that I have a torn anterior cruciate ligament and both menisci in my left knee. I will have to have surgery this week and start recovery,” Carolina explained on her social networks in early June.

Since then, he began a fight against the clock to try to arrive on time for the absolute World Cup that was held in Huelva in mid-December, but was narrowly missed on time. With the injury practically forgotten and training almost normally, now he just needs competition rhythm to get back to his best version.

Given that during the remainder of the month and during February there are no World Tour tournaments, the Huelva-born has her sights set on Germany, the beginning of a path that should lead to the 2024 Paris Olympics, its long-term goal.
