ZOH 2022 | A bittersweet tribute to Quinn’s coach. He will lead American hockey players in Beijing

The US leadership has also newly appointed John Vanbiesbrouck as general manager. The team for the Olympic Games was originally to consist of Bill Guerin, but he also resigned due to the absence of NHL hockey players.

Fifty-five-year-old Quinn was originally to be Sullivan’s assistant at the Olympics. “Being appointed head coach in such circumstances is a bit bittersweet,” the former New York Rangers coach was quoted as saying by the AP.

“We all hoped that the NHL boys would play in the Olympics, but even so, being appointed a national team coach is a great honor for me,” added Quinn, who finished at the Rangers in May after three years. He has already worked as an assistant in the USA selection at the World Championships in 2016, 2012 and 2007.

Vanbiesbrouck, 58, is the third manager of the US Olympic team. Stan Bowman was originally given the role, but resigned to investigate the sexual assault scandal during his tenure in Chicago.

Former goalkeeper Vanbiesbrouck played for the Rangers, Florida or Philadelphia. With the national team, he participated in the games in Nagano, where the NHL players started for the first time. For the past three and a half years, he has served as the American Union’s assistant director of hockey operations.
