WTA – Chinese state media reveal another video of Peng Shuai

Beijing (SID) – Chinese state media have distributed further unverified video footage of tennis player Peng Shuai, who has since disappeared. A reporter for the state newspaper Global Times tweeted a seven-second recording of Peng speaking to Chinese basketball icon Yao Ming on Sunday.

According to the reporter, whose account is marked as a “state-bound medium” on Twitter, the video was sent by a friend and was made on Sunday morning on the sidelines of a cross-country skiing event in Shanghai. She also posted a photo showing Peng and Yao with Olympic sailing champion Xu Lijia and former table tennis player Wang Liqin.

Peng reported in early November that he had been sexually abused by former Chinese Vice Prime Minister Zhang Gaoli. Although the former world number one in doubles spoke up again after her disappearance, doubts remain about her well-being and the freedom of her statements. As a result, the tennis players’ organization WTA has suspended all tournaments in China and Hong Kong.
