In the next edition of the Nations League – that of 2022/23 – Belgium will play against the Netherlands, Poland and Wales in the group stage. There is a good chance that the edition that follows – that of 2024/25 – will be redrawn. To the Polish medium Matches UEFA Vice-President Zbigniew Boniek tells us that the top countries from CONMEBOL, the South American football federation, will be invited.

“From 2024 CONMEBOL will be part of the Nations League,” says Boniek. “We don’t know exactly through which formula or in what form yet, but there is an agreement.” Boniek adds that the six best CONMEBOL teams will join League A – where Belgium now resides. Four other South American teams advance to League B.

At Reuters, UEFA confirms its intentions, but is more cautious. “UEFA is working on a number of projects with CONMEBOL, such as joining the Nations League. But nothing is official and no decision has been made yet.”
