Ligue 1 will increase to 18 clubs instead of 20 from the 2023-2024 season. While no decision has yet been made regarding Ligue 2, it could also be subject to a change in the future. In any case, the players of the French second division are not in favor of moving to 18 clubs. Indeed, according to the UNFP, the main union for professional footballers, 89% of them vote against.
“In addition to the financial and social consequences, with the disappearance of a large number of employment contracts, not only among footballers, there is also the compulsory taking into account of the sporting dimension for Ligue 2 players, called to play only 34 days of the championship ”, the UNFP said in a statement.
“As they ask us, 89 percent of footballers in @ Ligue2BKT who will therefore vote on Thursday, via @UNFP, against the reduction to 18 of the number of clubs in L2. “
