Tennis tournament in Abu Dhabi turns into a superspreader event – sports mix

Corona-Alarm bei den Tennis-Top-Stars!

The well-endowed but sportingly meaningless invitation event in Abu Dhabi (took place from December 16 to 18) is turning out to be more and more a super-spreader event!

Eight professionals – two women and six men – competed in the desert. Five of them made their corona infection public shortly afterwards.

The first and most famous case: Rafael Nadal (35). He was not the only one: One after the other, Ons Jabeur (26), Belinda Bencic (24), Denis Shapovalov (22) and Andrej Rublev (24) reported that they were corona-positive. The planned US Open winner Emma Raducanu (19) had to be quarantined in Abu Dhabi in advance because she was infected.

There is no end to the dubious positive reports. Because not only the professionals are affected, also trainers and supervisors. After Carlos Moya (45), Marc Lopez (39), superstar Nadal’s second coach, has now also tested positive.

Lopez sat for the first time in the box of Nadal, who had celebrated his comeback after a long injury at the dubious event. He has now paid dearly for that. The infection completely messes up his preparation for the Australian Open (from January 17th).

This joke tournament would have been better saved by the tennis stars in these times …
