Explanation Makkelie causes surprise: ‘The fog lifts, talk a lot and say nothing’

Danny Makkelie explained after PSV-FC Utrecht why he approved the goal of PSV player Ritsu Doan, although Erick Gutiérrez seemed to be annoyingly offside. ESPN analysts Kees Kwakman and Marciano Vink frowned when they heard the story of the leader from Dordrecht.

Makkelie looked at the screen during the match and saw that Gutiérrez was in the path of Doan’s shot. However, this was ‘not immediately punishable’, the arbitrator found. “And that was all reviewed when he stood at that screen for thirty seconds,” Kwakman said in a statement The Grandstand, after hearing Makkelie’s explanation.

Vink had to think back to Edwin van de Graaf’s explanation, after an Ajax goal against Willem II had been rejected that Thursday. “It’s basically exactly the same as last week: they’re going to talk a lot, hoping they can create some kind of distraction. Exactly the same, sort of fog up, a lot of talk and you don’t say anything in the end.”

The hit approved by Makkelie meant the 3-1 for PSV. The Eindhoven team eventually won 4-1.
