Australian Open 2022: Serena Williams does not take part in the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne

“Melbourne is one of my favorite cities and I look forward to playing there every year,” added the 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner.

She will “miss the fans, but I look forward to going back and doing my best”.

The 40-year-old had already missed the last Grand Slam event to date. After a tear in the hamstring muscles, she could not compete in the US Open.

Last year Williams reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open.

She has already won the title seven times in Melbourne, most recently in 2017.

This makes the Australian Open one of the American’s most successful tournaments.

Due to the cancellation, Williams has to wait for the chance to attack her big dream. The US-American currently has 23 Grand Slam titles, only one success is missing until Margaret Court’s record. The Australian has 24 major successes, but not all of them during the so-called “Open Era”, which began in 1969.
