ATP Finals – Boris Becker congratulates Alexander Zverev on his triumph: “That has to be the most important goal now”

Alexander Zverev ended the season perfectly with the 6: 4, 6: 4 success against Daniil Medvedev in the final in Turin and also made up a lot of ground in the world rankings. The Olympic champion, currently number three in the ranking, moves up to 800 points on Medvedev, while industry leader Djokovic is still 3700.

“In my opinion, Daniil and Sascha will play for first place together with Novak next year,” said Boris Becker in conversation with Eurosport.de.

The six-time Grand Slam tournament winner currently sees no player who could pose a threat to the trio in the ranking.

Zverev himself made it clear just a few minutes after the final success in Turin that he was aiming for first place in the coming year.

Zverev triumph at finals: monster rallies and a cheeky match point

That was “correct”, the Hamburg native replied in the affirmative to a corresponding question on the “Sky” microphone. “This claim is not arrogant, but honest and deserved,” added Mischa Zverev, who advised his brother in Turin.

Becker: “Only works with a Grand Slam victory”

Becker sees it similarly, although Zverev would have to achieve something that was previously denied to him. “It’s only possible with a Grand Slam victory,” emphasizes the 53-year-old: “That must now be Sascha’s most important goal in 2022.”

The victory in one of the four major competitions is rewarded with 2000 points for the ATP ranking, for the success in the ATP Finals Zverev brought in 1500 points and 1.4 million dollars in prize money.

Champion Zverev at the press conference: “Give me that thing”

The Turin champion wants to close the gap in the missing Grand Slam triumph as soon as possible. “I want to achieve so much in the coming year, precisely because I haven’t achieved everything yet,” said Zverev tellingly.

But maybe the tennis star will win a “title” this year when Germany’s athlete of the year is chosen in Baden Baden on December 19. A prominent supporter has already been found.

“Sascha would have my voice,” said Becker.
