(mb) A trick thief stole jewelry in a residential building on Habringhauser Weg on Wednesday.
The perpetrator rang the doorbell of a senior citizen around 2:30 p.m. He posed as an employee of the Salzkotten waterworks and described that there had been a burst water pipe in the city center. Now he has to check whether the lines in the elderly woman’s house are OK. The man entered the house and turned on all the taps on the floors. In the basement, the perpetrator asked the injured party to wait in the laundry room to see whether the water was running. The perpetrator was then alone up in the house for a long time. After the waterworker left, the victim noticed open cupboards. The elderly woman’s jewelry was stolen from it. The southern-looking suspect is said to be 170 to 175 cm tall. He wore a dark blue quilted jacket, baseball cap, and a surgical mask.
The police are looking for witnesses who saw the suspect before or after the crime in the area of the residential area around Habringhauser Weg. Other suspicious people or vehicles may have been seen in the context. The police will receive relevant information on 05251/3060.
Tricksters and fraudsters like to take advantage of the innocence of older people in particular and steal from or defraud them in their own homes. The first goal of the perpetrators is: They want to be let in so that they are alone with the victim. Then they do not need to fear any witnesses or help for the victim. With diversionary maneuvers, they even manage to rummage through the victim’s apartment in the presence of the victim.
