Sergio Aguero has been told to stop playing football, report journalists Gerard Romero and Fabrizio Romano. The 33-year-old attacker from Barcelona is struggling with heart problems, which, according to the doctors, makes it impossible to continue playing football. According to the journalists, the decision is final and Barcelona has been informed about it. A press conference will follow next week.

Aguero was replaced three weeks ago in the home game against Deportivo Alavés (1-1) just before half-time. The attacker grabbed his chest and neck in the 41st minute while lying on the field, and appeared to have breathing problems. He didn’t want to get on the stretcher and quietly walked off the field. After an examination in the dressing room by the Barcelona medical staff, it was decided to take the attacker to hospital. The second half in the Camp Nou had already started and television cameras from LaTdT recorded how he was transported from the stadium to the hospital.

He underwent a heart examination a day later, the results of which Barcelona released. “Sergio Agüero should be subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic treatment carried out by Dr. Joseph Brugada. He is therefore not available for the next three months. Within that period, the effectiveness of the treatment must be determined to determine his recovery process,” Barcelona said in an official statement. As a teenager, Agüero already suffered from cardiac arrhythmias, but later did not suffer from it anymore.

Aguero responded on November 12 to the rumors of the possible termination of his football career, which had already appeared in the Spanish press at the time. “In response to the rumours, I can tell you that I am following all instructions given to me by the doctors at the club,” the Argentine wrote on Twitter. “I’m undergoing tests and treatment and in 90 days we’ll watch the progression. Always stay positive!”

Thus comes a sad end to the long and successful football career of Agüero. The attacker was taken away from his childhood sweetheart Independiente by Atlético Madrid at a young age. After five successful years in Madrid, winning the Europa League and Spanish Super Cup, Agüero moved to Manchester City. The striker had an extremely successful period in England and became City’s all-time club top scorer with 260 goals in ten years. He was also five times national champion and he won the FA Cup, among other things. Last summer he went on a free transfer to Barcelona, where he initially struggled with a calf injury. In the end, he only played five games for Barça, scoring once. Aguero also made 101 appearances for Argentina, scoring 41 times. He played as a substitute in the 2014 World Cup final, lost to Germany (1-0).
