In 13 and a half months, Roberto Martinez’s contract will expire: to what extent are you preparing for the future?
We always work in anticipation of events but as regards the post of manager, it is still too early. The examples of premature announcements of a succession are legion and very often constitute so many failures. See Danny Blind in the Netherlands. In 2014, the KNVB had prepared him for the succession of Guus Hiddink by involving him on the front of the stage. A fiasco! You can’t work in football like you work in business. Would you ask him to pick up where it became so obvious that it was stuck there after 6 years in office?
It is a point of reflection that should perhaps be considered to include on the agenda, indeed. On Friday, before the Estonia match, we visited the new federal premises in the company of the selected. I felt tremendous enthusiasm within this group. Even Lukaku, however injured, made the hook since his rehabilitation session in Antwerp to come and poke his head. There will be international retreats with Qatar, that’s for sure. But probably not as much as predicted. The handover between generations could therefore take place in a gentle way. And as such, one could indeed wonder if it is not worth the trouble to probe Roberto on his intentions. It is not written at the bottom of his contract that we cannot discuss a third extension. Because, it must be said: this national team deserves that we do not put just anyone at its head.
