On the occasion of Veteran’s Day, Joe Biden he had quoted Leroy ‘Satchell’ Paige, legendary baseball player of the last century, known for his long career. In a service that aired on the Fox, on the Sean Hannity Show program, the US president declared: “Satchell Paige, he big ne * ro».

Put like this, the sentence of Joe Biden it sounds highly racist, but it needs to be contextualized. ‘Satchell’ Paige, in fact, he was a great pitcher of the Negro League, the league formed by African American baseball players in the 1920s, when apartheid was still a reality in every sector of life in the United States, including sports. Only later, with the opening to African American players in the Major League Baseball, the player would compete with white athletes, also becoming the oldest ‘freshman’ in history (at 42) and the oldest all-star ever (at 47).

The Associated Press pointed out the cut in the service. Fox, known for its Republican sympathies, defended itself in this way, through a spokesperson: “The cut was necessary for reasons of space, but then the full speech was broadcast on the Fox and Friends program”.
