Schwandorf. There were Bavarian championship titles for the Upper Palatinate judo youth at the Open Bavarian Judo Kata Championship on November 13th in Freising. 80 judo athletes came together, also from other federal states and Austria. Four young judokas from the Upper Palatinate (two pairs) from TSV Schwandorf and JV Sulzbach-Rosenberg faced the special challenges of a kata. Kata means the “basic form”. It is about maintaining the traditional, original forms of judo techniques and deepening them personally for the judoka.

With the inevitable interruptions, the Upper Palatinate judokas have been training primarily the nage-no-kata (kata of throwing techniques), which has also been included in the requirements of the belt exams, for two years. Simon Nicola (TSV 1880 Schwandorf) and Nicolas Nagelschmidt (training partner of JV Sulzbach-Rosenberg) made their U15 debut with Koshi-Waza (hip throws) and Ashi-Waza (foot throws).

In the U18 age group, the somewhat experienced Emily Beidin and Marcel Knaus started in the groups Te-Waza (hand throws) and Koshi-Waza (hip throws). The above-mentioned individual groups of the Nage-no-kata each had to be run twice according to a strict ceremony, with Uke and Tori having to change partners as equal partners. Tori is the one who does the technique, Uke instead attacks but is defeated. A Kata evaluation (ten-point system) includes perfect posture and absolute control when throwing and falling. The break in equilibrium (Kuzushi) must be clearly recognizable and efficient.

The judges were obviously impressed by the body tension and dynamism of the Upper Palatinate athletes, because both couples received the highest scores in their age groups and were happy about their gold medals and the title of “Bavarian Kata Masters 2021”.
