FIFA president finds support for biennial World Cup in Africa and sees “fear” among top countries | football

The African football countries are therefore going against the position of their European and South American colleagues, who are anything but eager for a World Cup every two years.

In Cairo, Gianni Infantino addressed the sensitive matter. “The opponents are those countries that are at the top,” he told African member states.

“You see that in every sector: reforms meet resistance from those at the top. They are afraid because they fear that their position will be at stake if something changes.”

Europe and South America are the leading continents in the World Cups. “We can only congratulate them for doing so well. They are an example, but at the same time we cannot close the door.”

Africa is still waiting for a semi-finalist at a World Cup and sends 5 countries to 32 participants. That number will be increased to 9 among the 48 participants from 2026.

On December 20, FIFA will organize a new meeting and the plans for a biennial World Cup will then be an important item on the agenda.
