The continuity of the Puerto Rican manager Alex Cora with the Boston Red Sox is assured, at least, until the 2024 season after the team kept the option that was in his contract.

The Red Sox announced Monday that Cora, 46, will continue to lead the team for the next three seasons after the triumphant return he had last, in which he began his second stage in office.

“Alex’s (Cora) leadership with our staff and our players was critical to everything we accomplished in 2021,” Red Sox director of baseball Chaim Bloom said in a statement. “Along with the entire Red Sox front office, I am excited that many years of partnership continue as we work together to bring another World Series trophy to Fenway Park.”

Since joining the Red Sox in 2018, Cora, in three seasons, the one in 2020 was out by suspension, has a winning record of 284-202, the best in the history of the team.

The Red Sox also set the 108-win mark in the 2018 season, his first at the helm of the team, when he won the World Series title.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to coach the Red Sox,” Cora said in a statement. “We experience so many special moments as a team and as a city in 2021, but we still have unfinished business to attend to.”

Cora reiterated that “I am excited about the current state of our organization and eager to continue my work with our main office, coaches, players and everyone who makes this place so special.”

The Puerto Rican manager was fired after being identified as one of those responsible for the Houston Astros signal theft scandal in 2017, when he was a bench coach with the Texan team.

After veteran Ron Roenicke led the team through the 2020 season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, Cora returned to the Boston dugout this year.

Cora, who finished fifth in the AL Manager of the Year voting, led the Red Sox to a winning record of 92-70 during the 2021 regular season, including 47 comeback victories, the best in the majors.

The Red Sox advanced to the American League Championship Series after defeating rival New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Game and the Tampa Bay Rays in the Young Circuit Division Series.

Boston lost in the American League Championship Series to the Astros in six games.
