MILAN ANTOŠ’S TUB: Lener was a disaster! He tore down everything that worked

It’s good that he finished, but he was supposed to finish it for me ten years before I found out now. This might help our hockey even more, but now we have reached a state where no one knows which way we want to go for young people. And this is mainly due to Slavomír Lener as the union chief coach, who held this position for nine years until 2019.

In fact, during his era, we never decided which way we wanted to go. He once wanted a Swedish system, then a Canadian system, and then a Finnish system. And he always wanted to put it in the Czech environment and convince everyone that this was the right direction. He never came up with his idea to move us somewhere. He was always just copying something. And it just didn’t work, which I consider to be one of his fundamental mistakes.

Lener finished at the hockey association! After the rift with the King

It was Lener who was setting up the things we’re struggling with today. One of the main mott was the financial support of small clubs, because almost all of our famous players grow out of them. But it was forgotten that if the boys want to play somewhere, they have to go to the junior extra league. And that should be the pinnacle of all that youth hockey strives for. Like the Junior Extraliga.

I am happy and grateful that it helps small clubs, but on the other hand we have to realize that the main youth hockey is done completely differently – in the junior and youth extraleague. There is the top of the pyramid, there parents should want to see their sons. If they do not stand out there, they will not get caught in adult hockey either. And Slavomír Lener completely neglected this.

And another huge mistake that goes after him: We all probably remember how Slavomír Lener used to insist that one or two young hockey players will always travel to the matches with the extra-league team. They unpacked the bag, made a comma for being there, packed the bag again, and drove home. The boys traveled a lot of kilometers and felt like they were extra-league players. But they were included there only on the basis of a decision to try something.

During Lener’s performance at the union, there was a rumor that a coach who had never played hockey was better than the one who had played it. The coaches became scientists who were still studying somewhere, and their superiority at the time was extreme.

I agree that someone who is not a former player can train in the Extralize or Chance League. But the children have to have former hockey players who have to show them how to shoot, how to skate. There is a scientist completely useless. But today it takes an awful long time to study a coaching license. We want education right after finishing hockey players, which stops them and discourages them from training.

Although Slavomír Lener resigned as a union chief coach in 2019, due to various relationships and a friend’s drive, he was only moved to another place. I think if anyone in any company fails, they should leave.

Yes, as a coach he was of great quality. But as a manager who was to change Czech hockey, he really failed. It was a disaster. I hope that everyone in the union is already aware that we really need to start working on children and young people. On what has gone wrong in recent years.

Milan Antos (51) is a former hockey striker, today an assistant to the coach of the Slavia youth and a co-commentator of the Czech Television. He played in the Czech extra league for twelve seasons, playing for Slavia, Plzeň, Jihlava and Ústí nad Labem. He won the title with the people of Prague in 2003 and bronze in 2000, and silver with the West Bohemians four years later.
