Bernd Nickel is dead – Eintracht Frankfurt mourns the loss of “Dr. Hammer” – Sport

Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt mourns club icon Bernd Nickel. The former Hessen midfielder died on Wednesday morning after a long illness at the age of 72. “With Bernd Nickel we are losing one of the club’s great identifying figures. Our condolences go to his family,” said President Peter Fischer.

Between 1968 and 1983 Nickel played 426 Bundesliga games for Eintracht and scored 141 goals. To this day he is the most dangerous midfielder in the Bundesliga, and in this statistic he is four goals ahead of Marco Reus from Dortmund. In addition to three triumphs in the DFB Cup, “Dr. Hammer”, as the fans called him because of his hard shot, also won the Uefa Cup with the Frankfurt team in 1980.

Nickel succeeded in transforming four corner balls directly from all four corners of the Frankfurt Waldstadion.
