2020 Thomas Cup Group A Final Standings: Perfect Indonesia, Taiwan Eliminated

KOMPAS.com – All matches in Group A of the 2020 Thomas Cup have been completed. As a result, the Indonesian team managed to carve out a perfect score, while Taiwan, which has a number of top badminton players, had to be eliminated from the competition.

The perfect achievement carved by the Indonesian team made them qualify for the quarter-finals or the top 8 of the 2020 Thomas Cup as winners of Group A.

The Indonesian team leads the 2020 Thomas Cup Group A standings with a record of three wins. They were able to beat three other competitors, namely Taiwan, Thailand, and Algeria.

Hendra Setiawan et al made convincing results in the first match of Group A of the 2020 Thomas Cup against Algeria, Sunday (10/10/2021) early morning WIB.

They beat Algeria with a score of 5-0 at Field 3 Ceres Arena, Aarhus, Denmark, venue Thomas and Uber Cup 2020.

Indonesia was left behind twice due to defeats to Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie as representatives in the men’s singles sector.

However, they were able to secure three other points through the struggles of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, and Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

As a result, Thomas Indonesia’s team was able to beat Thailand with a score of 3-2.

Furthermore, Indonesia again faced fierce resistance in the last match of Group A against Taiwan.

The Indonesia vs Taiwan match was very decisive for both teams and Thailand, who got a share against Algeria in the last match.

After competing fiercely until the fifth party, Indonesia came out as the winner. The Red and White Team successfully beat Taiwan with a score of 3-2.

The three points for Indonesia were contributed by representatives in the men’s singles sector, namely Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Jonatan Christie, and Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

Meanwhile, two points for Taiwan were created thanks to the double victories of their sons, Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin and Lu Ching Yao/Yang Po Han.

Lee/Wang carved out a victory over Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, while Lu/Yang succeeded in defeating Mohammad Ahsan/Daniel Marthin.

The victory over Taiwan also confirmed Indonesia’s status as the winner of Group A of the 2020 Thomas Cup.

On the other hand, Taiwan must be eliminated from the competition. Because, after that, Thailand successfully won 5-0 over Algeria.

Taiwan finished third with a record of one win (over Algeria), while Thailand finished second.

Thailand also has the right to qualify for the top 8 of the 2020 Thomas Cup, accompanying Indonesia as the winner of Group A.

Indonesia and Thailand followed the other six teams who first confirmed the top 8 tickets, namely South Korea, Denmark, China, India, Malaysia, and Japan.

South Korea and Denmark are representatives from Group B, while Denmark and China are from Group C. Then, Malaysia and Japan qualify for the top 8 as representatives of Group D.

They have picked up two wins so that they are certain to qualify even though they have not played the last match of the group phase.

The six teams will only play their final group stage match on Thursday (14/10/2021) early in the morning and noon WIB.

In the last match, each of them will face off to determine the status of champion and runner up group.
