Gabon cracks in Benghazi, Mali and Egypt with a short head

Three matches counting for the first day of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers were on the program this Wednesday evening in Africa.

Mali 1-0 Rwanda (Group E)

Despite the relocation of the match to Agadir, Morocco, due to a lack of a standard stadium, Mali held its place “at home” against Rwanda (1-0). Dominators but in lack of efficiency, the Eagles first saw Djenepo fail on the penalty spot against the opposing goalkeeper, but they did not procrastinate and the former Messin Adama Traoré, launched in depth, gave them the advantage to the next minute after having nicely erased the opposing goalkeeper (19e). Mohamed Magassouba’s men then pushed at the end of a more choppy second period to try to make the addition worse but the realism was lacking. Kenya and Uganda face off in the group’s other game on Thursday. Rwanda will host Kenya on Sunday, while Mali will visit Uganda the next day.

Libya 2-1 Gabon (Group F)

Bad operation for Gabon, overthrown by Libya (1-2) on the wire in Benghazi. With a superb brushed strike, the former Bordeaux native Poko had yet placed the Panthers in the lead (11e), but captain Salama equalized with a header from a corner for the Knights of the Mediterranean (27e), with the help of the post and Obiang, badly placed. The other center-back, Al Warfali, then snatched the victory, also with a header, in the 89e minute for the Libyans. Patrice Neveu’s men will regret their defensive largesse and the sometimes surprising decisions of the Ethiopian referee Bamlak Tessema who in particular refused a goal that seemed lawful to Aubameyang, then defeated by the bar.

Egypt 1-0 Angola (Group F)

In the other match of the group, Egypt had all the trouble in the world to get rid of Angola (1-0) in Cairo. Deprived of Salah and Elneny, retained in club, the Pharaohs however only needed 5 minutes to take the lead on a penalty obtained by Fatouh and transformed by Afsha (1-0, 5e). During a very open first half hour, the Egyptians however conceded many chances before suffering the opposing domination. The second half turned out to be more closed and Hossam El Badry’s men were able to keep their advantage without convincing. Appointment Sunday for Gabon-Egypt and Tuesday for Angola-Libya.
