Paralympic Joachim Gérard urgently hospitalized | Paralympic Games

Gérard became “suddenly and completely unexpectedly unwell”, according to the BPC statement. “The emergency services were quickly on the scene and took Joachim Gérard to the hospital. He was then conscious again and able to answer questions.”

“Initial investigations point to a cardiological problem. Gérard must remain in hospital for further observation and examination. We hope to be able to provide more information about Joachim Gérard’s condition later on.”

Gérard, the world’s number 3, was unexpectedly eliminated in the third round of the singles in Tokyo. Gérard, who already won two grand slams earlier this season with the Australian Open and Wimbledon, was tipped in advance as a major contender for a medal.

Tokyo was not a success story in doubles either. On the side of Jef Vandorpe, he lost in the third round to the British top seed heads Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid. Gérard won the bronze medal in the singles at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
