Bronze for Puerto Rico at the Pan American Youth Table Tennis Championship | Others

Puerto Rico got its first medals at the Pan American Youth Table Tennis Championship.

The women’s and men’s teams in the U-15 and U-19 categories achieved the bronze medal in the event that takes place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The U-15 women’s squad led the group stage undefeated, with victories over Mexico (3-0), Guatemala (3-1) and Venezuela (3-0). Then, after receiving ‘bye’ in the quarterfinals, they fell 3-2 to Canada in the semifinal round.

Edmarie León Burgos, Valentina Dávila Santiago, Alahia Medina and Kristal Meléndez Lafontaine made up the team.

Meanwhile, the U-15 men’s team also finished first in the group stage with wins over Brazil (3-2) and Colombia (3-1). In the semifinal, they fell 3-2 to host country Dominican Republic.

The Puerto Rican squad was made up of Derek Valentín, Enrique Yezue Ríos Torres, Giovanni Centeno Flores and José Nieves Burgos.

For their part, the U-19 women finished the group stage undefeated with triumphs over Canada (3-1) and Venezuela (3-2). Then, in the quarterfinals, they beat Chile 3-0; and in the semifinal they succumbed to the United States with a score of 3-1.

This team was made up of Alondra Rodríguez, Brianna Burgos, Fabiola Díaz and Gabriella Vázquez.

Meanwhile, the U-19 boys finished second in their group, winning a 3-0 win over Haiti and losing 3-2 to Brazil. In the quarterfinals, they beat Canada 3-1 before losing to Chile 3-2 in the semifinals.

Ángel Naranjo led the team also made up of Pablo Figueroa Ortiz, Yamil Castellano Díaz and Jabdiel Torres.

Puerto Rico remains active in the other mixed doubles, men’s and women’s doubles, and singles events.
