The opening of the 2021 National Women’s Basketball League is postponed to Tuesday

EL NUEVO DIARIO, SANTO DOMINGO. The fifth version of the National Women’s Basketball League (LNBF), scheduled to open this Thursday, was postponed to next Tuesday, August 17, due to the weather conditions presented by storm Fred, which affects the Dominican Republic from this Wednesday .

Given these conditions, next Tuesday will be the official opening of the LNBF with a two-game card, at the Virgilio Travieso Soto Sports Palace.

After the 2020 edition was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, which still hits the country and the world, the championship for the Don Máximo Bernal Cup will resume in 2021.

The announcement was made by the president of the LNBF, Fernando Teruel. He said that the organizing committee is constantly working in order to provide an attractive championship, which is dedicated to the first lady of the Republic, Raquel Arbaje de Abinader.

The Reserve Bank and the Ministry of Sports, among other institutions, support the tournament.

In the tournament, 36 regular series matches will be played, under a free-for-all format, from which four teams will advance to the semifinal round, which will also play a “round robin”, two games each, and the best two will earn their right to dispute the final at 5-3.

The organizing committee of the tournament is chaired by the director of the Supérate program, Gloria Reyes, who leads a team of collaborators that includes Andrés Van der Horts, deputy Bolívar Valera, among other personalities.

Nine teams from different parts of the country will compete in the Don Máximo Bernal Cup. The champion team, Murallas de San Lázaro, of this capital, will defend its two championships won in 2018-2019 against Mauricio Báez, Águilas de Guachupita (National District); South Indies (Baní); the Reynas del Este (Hato Mayor); Club Calero, Leñeras de Los Mina (Santo Domingo Este); Olímpicas de La Vega (La Vega) and Las Hidalgas de Santiago (Santiago).

The teams will be able to bring reinforcements from the country of their choice, an opening for this occasion, since in previous years they were all from Cuba.
