Pļaviņš / Točs starts the European beach volleyball championship with a victory

The fourth place winners of the Tokyo Olympic Games, Pļaviņš / Točs, who were numbered 18th in the tournament, beat the Swiss, who were numbered 15th, with the result 2-0 (28:26, 21:18).

The start of the first set was more successful for the Swiss, but then the Latvian duo took the lead and held the victory with a two-point advantage.

Kratigers / Hauseners also started the second set in the lead, but soon Pļaviņš / Točs regained the leading position and kept the two- to four-point advantage of the entire remaining set.

The Latvian duo with an attack scored 34 points, while the Swiss – 35 points. Pļaviņš / Točs had three blocks, while Kratiger / Hausener – two, Latvian volleyball players once booked an irresistible service, however, Pļaviņš and Točs also had more mistakes (11: 7).

Group B originally had a duo of Kratiger and Floarian Brewer, but Brewer withdrew from the tournament at the last minute due to an injury and was replaced by Hausener.

With this victory, the Latvian duo has already secured a place in the playoffs.

In the second game of the group, the Czechs Ondržej Perušič and David Schweiner, who were placed with the 2nd number, and the Austrian couple Clemens Doppler / Alexander Horst (31st) will meet.

It has already been reported that Aleksandrs Samoilovs / Jānis Šmēdiņš started the European Championship in Vienna with a loss on Thursday.

Samoilovs / Šmēdiņš, who were placed in the tournament with the 14th number, with the result 0-2 (25:27, 20:22) suffered a loss against Nikita Lamin / Taras Miskiv from Russia, who was placed with the 19th number.

Tīna Graudiņa / Anastasija Kravčenoka won both games on Wednesday and won the first place in the subgroup.

Almost all of Europe’s strongest beach volleyball teams are taking part in the men’s competition in Vienna, including the Norwegian Olympic duo Anness Mul and Christian Serum, as well as vice-champions Vyacheslav Krasilnikov / Oleg Stoyanov, who represented the Russian Committees in Tokyo. On the other hand, there is a lack of several strong duets in women’s competition.

The previous European Championship took place on Majori beach, but due to floods caused by strong winds, several games were held in Mārupe region. In the September 2020 home tournament, Latvia was represented by eight teams, including Graudiņa / Kravčenoka, Samoilovs / Šmēdiņš and Pļaviņš / Točs, with all three Latvian duets stopping in the eighth final.

The Norwegian Annešs Mūls and Kristians Sērums, as well as the Swiss Joan Heidrich and Anuka Verge-Depre celebrated the victory in the 2020 European Championship in Jūrmala.

The 2021 European Championships in Vienna will take place from 15 to 15 August and will be the first major tournament next week after the Tokyo Olympics.
