Thirty-five-year-old Nadal already had a two-month break due to injury after a semi-final defeat at Roland Garros. He missed Wimbledon and the Olympics and returned to the courts last week in Washington, DC, where he was eliminated in the round of 16.
Now the organizers have announced that Nadal will not start in Cincinnati either. World number one Serb Novak Djokovic and Swiss Roger Federer have already withdrawn from the tournament, with whom the 2013 champion shares a record in the number of grand slams won.
