Ostapenko and Sevastova small rises in WTA rank / Article

Latvia’s leading tennis players Alona Ostapenko and Anastasia Sevastova have made small increases in the ranking of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Ostapenko rose to the 29th position by one place, and Sevastova by two columns to the 63rd place.

Latvia’s leading tennis players previously participated in the Tokyo Olympic Games tournament, both losing in the first round. However, WTA ranking points are not awarded at the Olympics. This week, Sevastova will compete in the WTA 500 Series in San Jose.

In the ranking of the 2021 season, Ostapenko takes the 26th place, but Sevastova is in the 38th position, without both tennis players changing their seats.

Meanwhile, Diāna Marcinkēviča has risen to 310th place by four positions, Daniela Vismane has won 17th place (351st), but Kamilla Bartone (385th) has increased by 33th place. Darya Semenistista (813) experienced a drop of one position, Sabine Rutlauka (891) regained one column, but Margarita Ignatjeva (978) resigned by 36 places. Patrīcija Špaka (1072) does not change her position, Elza Tomase (1155) lost eight seats, but the former first Latvian racket Līga Dekmeijere slipped seven seats down (1349).

There have been no changes in the top ten over the past week. The leader is still the representative of Australia Ashley Barthi, followed by the Japanese Naomi Osaka, and the third place is taken by the Belarusian Arina Sabalenko. The fourth position is taken by the American Sofia Kenny, the fifth – by the Canadian Bianka Andresco, the sixth – by the Ukrainian Jelina Svitollin. The seventh place is taken by the Czech Karolina Plischkova, the eighth – by the Polish Iga Švjonteka, the ninth is the Spanish Garvinje Mugurusa, ahead of the Romanian Simon Halepa.

There were no competitions on the WTA tour last week.

In the ranking of doubles, Ostapenko retained the 22nd position, but Sevastova lost two places (206). Marcinkēviča has regained 53 positions (307th), but the increase of 31 places is for Vismane (429th). Bartone (737) resigned for one position, Semenistas (793) won two places, but Ignatjeva does not change her position (947). A fall of three places for Špaka (1010), four (1055) for Dekmeijere and 13 (1598) for Rutlauka.
