They too were playing their first round but failed to emulate Monfils. Corentin Moutet, from qualifying, was not spoiled by falling on Reilly Opelka, recent finalist in Toronto. The Frenchman bravely played his luck but surrendered in three sets (7-6 [3], 4-6, 6-4). Against another American, Frances Tiafoe, Ugo Humbert surrendered in two sets and after a dantesque tie-break during which he saved five match points, to no avail (7-5, 7-6 [9]).
