CANCÚN, Q. ROO. –The Belgian Inter-Federal Olympic Committee (BOIC) will negotiate with the government a tax exemption on the bonds that the Tokyo 2020 medalists will receive. Phillippe Vander Putten, chief executive of the organization, stressed that a total of 643 thousand euros will be awarded to athletes who stood on the podium or finished within the best eight.

According to the Insidethegames platform, the money for these bonuses came from the Belgian National Lottery and will benefit 69 athletes who obtained good results in the past Olympic Games.

The Belgian delegation achieved seven medals at Tokyo 2020, three gold, one silver and three bronze. This was their best performance at the Olympic Games since London 1948, where they also won seven medals.

Nafi Thiam, who became a two-time Olympic heptathlon champion, and Nina Derwael, the first Belgian gymnast to win gold, received the most money, with € 50,000 each. While the 18 members of the men’s hockey team will receive 12,500 euros for each member.

The equestrian team that finished in third place will receive 5,000 euros for each member. This was Belgium’s first medal in the discipline since the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

The BOIC detailed that the athletes’ coaches will receive 25 percent of the bonus that each athlete receives, according to their medal. The fourth places will receive between 10,000 and 2,500 euros. While the fifth to eighth place will be 5,000 or 1,250 euros.
