Nba, Griffin starts from Brooklyn: ‘I have work to finish’

Blake talks about the choice of the Nets: “Here I knew what was there and I’m working to be even more useful”

Blake Griffin could have fetched more free agency money. He could choose a team ready to give him back that star role he had for the vast majority of his career. Instead he had no doubts, he returned to Brooklyn, even knowing that he will be the wingman and not the captain. “I have work to finish here – he says confidently -. And I believe in us, I believe we have everything we need to finish it ”.

Griffin arrived in Brooklyn in March after breaking free from Detroit. He was a former star looking for a chance to prove he was still worth something, in a team that didn’t ask him to be the star but a useful player to the system. “I loved everything in Brooklyn, from the owner to the last of the staff – he explained via zoom -. When I arrived I was focused on the season, on the new situation I was in. Once I understood the dynamics of the team, I tried to figure out when I could make myself heard, which I hope to do more this year, having been in the team from the beginning. Our Big Three are under so much pressure, sometimes you need someone else to speak up, someone other than one of them or Steve Nash. Jeff Green was that kind of voice last year, this year I hope I am. It is a crucial role ”.

restart

Griffin, 32, closed his first taste of the Nets with 10 points and 4.7 rebounds per regular season. He immediately fell into the part, that of a supporting actor in the team of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden. A role that he had never played in his NBA career, but which he is trying to perfect. “For the first time in years I face a summer without having to do rehabilitation, and it’s fantastic – he explains -: I’m working on being part of the Nets system, on what I know is expected of me, on what I will have to do. I hope I never stop improving, but it’s great to have time to work on myself ”.

objective

Blake knows he has to do whatever it takes to get the job done. And he is confident that the Nets leadership has done its part. “Sean (GM Marks, ed) did a great job of getting the players they needed – Griffin says confidently -. He’s also renewed Kevin Durant’s contract, the kind of talent that helps make things work – it’s comforting to know someone like him is on the team for the long term. We have a lot of work to do, I know that in the NBA there is nothing taken for granted but I like the team, I like the players and the staff we have. Knowing the kind of people I would find here was instrumental in my choice: last year we didn’t get what we wanted, and the thought of getting it done made me realize that this is the right place for me. As a team we know we have work to finish: I want to be part of this ”. The 2022 title race for the Nets has already started.
