Washington, shooting outside the stadium: MLB baseball match suspended

(LaPresse) The MLB baseball game between the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres was suspended in the sixth inning on the evening of Saturday, July 17, following a shooting that broke out outside Nationals Park in the United States capital. The fire fight between people in two cars left three people injured. Among them was a woman who was watching the game and who was shot while outside the stadium. It is not life threatening. Two people who were in one of the cars later entered a local hospital with gunshot wounds and were questioned by investigators, who are still trying to locate the second vehicle involved in the shooting. The Padres had just stepped onto the pitch for the end of the sixth inning when several shots were heard from the left side of the baseball field. Fans seated in the left area quickly began exiting through the central court gate. Soon after, the fans along the first base side began to quickly leave their seats. Some supporters crowded into the Padres bench on the third base side for safety, as sirens could be heard from outside the facility. The Nationals then announced that there had been an incident outside the stadium instructing the public to stay inside the stadium. About 10 minutes later, the team tweeted: “A shooting has been reported outside the third base gate at Nationals Park. Fans can exit the baseball field via CF and RF gates.” The Padres were leading 8-4 when play was stopped. It will resume on Sunday afternoon, followed by the regularly scheduled match.
