National Women’s Professional Baseball League Uniform, Dress-X-MOL

Throughout the United States, museums such as the Grand Rapids Public Museum are carefully preserving the uniforms of the National Women’s Professional Baseball League. The Grand Rapids Public Museum has an important collection of cultural relics and archives involving a team of the Grand Rapids “chickens” of the league. This article explores AAGPBL uniforms through this series and other series throughout the Midwest. In addition to oral history and visual sources, object-based research also reveals how the dress was designed and constructed, and how the women wearing it modified it.

The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Uniform


Throughout the United States, museums like the Grand Rapids Public Museum are carefully preserving the uniforms of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The Grand Rapids Public Museum holds an important artifact and archive collection involving one of the League’s teams, the Grand Rapids “Chicks.” This paper explores the AAGPBL uniform through this collection and others across the Midwest. In addition to oral histories and visual sources, object-based research reveals how the garment was designed and constructed, as well as how it was modified by the women who wore it.
