The Olympic Committee presented what clothes Czech athletes will wear at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics. The designs are designed by Zuzana Osako, who tailor-made the collection to everyone. In the models, she connected the Czech cultural heritage with the culture of the host country.

The Czech Olympic Committee has long been looking for someone who could create clothes for the representatives of this year’s Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, but at the same time it must have been someone who understands Japanese culture. In the end, the choice fell on designer Zuzana Osako, who lived in Japan with her husband for several years. “It is a great honor. When I got the offer, I cried for half a day, ” Zuzana Osako let herself be heard.

Osako was given a clear assignment

The designer was given a clear task: to honor the traditions of the host country, but also to show our traditions. It was therefore important to find an element that meets the traditions of both countries. “I found it in the blueprint.” explains the designer in an interview for ČT24. Blueprint was included in the UNESCO list of intangible world heritage in 2018 and has a long tradition in Japan. As with traditional costumes, the models for men and women are significantly different.

“I was not thinking about differentiating, but rather what the aesthetics of the host country are like. And that is mainly elegance, ” says Osako. Therefore, she created models that are elegant, but at the same time reflect the culture of both countries. Osako created five unique cuts, three for men and two for women. The woman has a dress under her skirts (outerwear with long sleeves, ed. Note), which is not entirely typical, because a skirt was usually worn for this type. “In order for the woman to make the most of her clothes, all she has to do is take off her skirt and she will wear a white dress.” adds. The man then has a shirt, vest and pants.

Minimalist colors and cuts

In terms of colors, the dress and pants are white, which was based on the clothing of the Czechoslovak team at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, where gymnast Věra Čáslavská became famous. Even with accessories, the designer was not idle. She created fans that also wore a blueprint. “The fan is a very smart thing, because it will definitely be hot there and we will be able to fan ourselves,” Aneta Holasová, a silver medalist from the 2019 European Games in gymnastics, was heard.

The clothes are designed so that the representatives can wear them even for casual wear. Osako also added that the pieces are created exclusively for the Czech Olympic team and will therefore not be available anywhere in the store. “The production is handmade and masterful in craftsmanship,” specified by a Czech designer.
