In the final fight, the Estonian fencers won South Korea with the result 36:32.
The Estonian team consisted of Jūlija Beļajeva, Katrīna Lehis, Ērika Kirpū and reservist Irina Embriha.
Belayeva was the first on the fencing track, defeating her opponent 4: 2 and putting Estonia in the lead, but after Lehi’s loss 3: 5, the result became 7: 7. The loss was also in Kirpu (4: 6), so the Estonians drove to 11:13.
Belayeva fought a draw with his opponent 2: 2 and there was a two-point difference between the two teams (13:15), but Kirpu’s victory 5: 4 slightly reduced the advantage of the opponents (18:19). Lehi maintained a 3: 3 draw with the South Korean (21:22), but then Embrych went on the track for the first time, winning 3: 2, making the overall draw 24:24.
Belayeva divided the points in half with her opponent (2: 2), thus the result remained the same (26:26). Lehi won his duel in a fierce battle with 10: 6 and brought Estonia the gold medal of the Olympic Games – 36:32.
In the bronze duel, Italy defeated China with 23:21.
Before that, in the quarter-finals, Estonia beat Poland with a score of 29:26, although at one point they were four points ahead, but in the semi-finals with a 42:32 victory over Italy.
Lehis previously won a bronze medal for Estonia in an individual competition with a spear.
According to the website of the Estonian Olympic Committee, athletes are entitled to a gold medal of 100,000 euros, silver 70,000 euros and bronze 45,000 euros. If the prize is won in a team competition, the prize is multiplied by two and distributed to all participants in the team.
The Tokyo Olympics will run until August 8.
