Van Bommel has another club: two-year contract with Wolfsburg

It’s official: Mark van Bommel is the new trainer of VfL Wolfsburg. The 44-year-old trainer from Maasbracht is the successor of Oliver Glasner. Van Bommel signs in Germany for two seasons.

After his dismissal from PSV in December 2019, Van Bommel was without a club and never made a secret of his desire to work in the Bundesliga. He has been associated with several clubs, including Hertha BSC, Eintracht Frankfurt and even his old club Bayern Munich, but the white smoke comes from Wolfsburg.

Kevin Hofland, Michael Frontzeck, Alex Abresch and Vincent Heilmann, who comes over from PSV, join Van Bommel, who returns to the Bundesliga after a little more than ten years. From 2006 to early 2011, he wore the Bayern Munich shirt and led Der Rekordmeister to the doubles twice as captain.

“We have spoken intensively with Mark van Bommel. In those conversations, our impression was confirmed: he fits perfectly with our philosophy,” says sporting director Jörg Schmadtke on the club site. “Mark is an internationally recognized football expert and knows what to expect in the Bundesliga. In addition, he has enormous ambition, which set him apart from the rest during his playing career. This is a dream solution.”

Van Bommel is also happy now that the bullet is through the church. “I am really looking forward to this challenge at Wolfsburg. My ideas are identical to those of the club management. Working as a coach in the Bundesliga is a great honour.”

Despite Van Bommel’s predecessor Glasner leading his team to the Champions League, his Wolfsburg job had become untenable. His relationship with Schmadtke had deteriorated seriously and it was reported that part of the player group had also looked forward to him, including Wout Weghorst. Glasner signed with Eintracht Frankfurt last week.
