US Open winner Jon Rahm: “I knew history could be about to repeat itself”

Did you know what score you had to score to win and what you were thinking about those last two putts?
Not that I really thought about it at the 17th, but the last time I won here I was birdie-eagle, and I knew I could finish strong again. I knew history could be about to repeat itself. I was aware of hitting this putt. I remained patient all day. I haven’t done a lot of long putts all week. I did one on Thursday 14th, but that’s the kind of putts I love. In the past I’ve done a few long left-right at times, and was able to do two more on the last two holes.

A first victory in Major on his first Father’s Day, it’s the icing on the cake!
Getting my first PGA Tour victory in 2017 in San Diego with my dad there, I was really happy. Now as a dad on my first fathers day with my dad? It’s even more incredible! You add the fact that we got engaged to my wife here too, and I have a very happy life. I can say that I have flourished off the golf course. It’s crazy that I’m sitting next to this trophy. I feel like this is a movie that is going to end soon and that I will wake up soon.

What was it like to have Phil Mickelson by your side when you found out you had won? It’s pretty unique that just a month ago, I was there watching him win, and I was like, man, that’s so cool! I participated in an extraordinary moment in history for him and for the history of golf. I think he was probably home and he came just to see what might happen because he told me he was going to watch. He was on the putting green when I was getting ready to tee off and he wished me good luck. The mere fact that he came shows that we are very good friends. We are extremely competitive, don’t get me wrong. I couldn’t have been happier for him when he won at the USPGA, he made history. In my own way, I wrote the history of Spain and showed that a lot of people were wrong.
