Mith more every day that lies between the Schalke trauma, the anticipation of Frankfurter Eintracht for the Europa League increases. Not only because of the memory of the terrific 2018/19 campaign, which led to the semi-finals, but because the competition has been upgraded again since then. With the introduction of a third European Cup, the Conference League, the Europa League now has the character of a Champions League light, one could also call it the prince’s class based on the term premier class.
Contrary to the ongoing trend of watering down, the Europa League will be compressed from 48 to 32 teams, which will significantly increase the sporting value. The proportion of teams from European football developing countries in this competition is falling significantly, the proportion of teams that have already gained experience in the Champions League and are among the expanded group of European leaders is increasing.
This is achieved by the fact that no champions from smaller national leagues qualify directly for the group stage of the Europa League, but ten teams that are eliminated in the final qualifying rounds for the group stage of the Champions League. Since only six qualifying participants advance into the premier class group stage, a lot of celebrities will be passed through to the prince class given the power density of the field.
Lots of sonorous names
Many clubs with illustrious names are competing for the Champions League this summer, some of which Eintracht only recently dealt with – Benfica Lisbon, Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Salzburg. AS Monaco (with trainer Niko Kovac), PSV Eindhoven (with trainer Roger Schmidt), Celtic Glasgow, Glasgow Rangers, Galatasaray Istanbul and Young Boys Bern are also in the running.
Directly for the group stage of the Europa League have made their position in the national championship or their success in the national cup competition Leicester City, West Ham United, Betis Sevilla, Real Sociedad San Sebastian, Olympique Marseille, Olympique Lyon, Lazio Rome, SSC Napoli, SC Braga, Lokomotiv Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht qualified.
As in the premier class, eight groups of four teams are formed in the prince class; in contrast to the big competition, only the group winners qualify directly for the round of 16, while the runners-up meet the eight third-placed finishers in the Champions League group stage in a qualifying round for the round of 16. The third in the Europa League group stage will continue – in the sixteenth finals of the Conference League.
Twelve teams have been chosen
The total funding of the Europa League sinks from 560 million euros to 465 million euros, but since only 32 instead of 48 clubs benefit from it, the chances of financial success increase. The 465 million euros will be distributed over four channels. The 32 participants in the group phase will receive 116.25 million euros (25 percent of the total) as an entry fee, each equal, 3.63 million euros. Almost 140 million euros are paid out in performance bonuses for victories or for reaching the various rounds.
UEFA pays out just under 70 million to participants for past successes. The European Cup results of the 32 clubs in the group stage for the past ten years are calculated and the so-called list of coefficients is drawn up. Each place in these performance statistics is worth 132,000 euros. The club in 32nd place receives 132,000 euros, the 31st 264,000 euros and the first 4.224 million euros – just for being there and the preliminary work.
