Premier League:Klopp and Liverpool reach the Champions League
Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea also qualify – despite the defeat – for the premier class. Arsenal FC missed the international competition.
Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC have done it: The Reds will play in the Champions League again in the coming season. With the 2-0 (1-0) win on Sunday against Crystal Palace on the final day of the English Premier League, the Klopp-Elf stormed third with 69 points. “That’s unbelievable,” said the German soccer coach after the game on Sky. “I am more than happy.”
For the dethroned football champions it looked more like a few match days ago that the Klopp-Elf would only be able to compete in the Europa League. A final spurt with five wins in a row and mistakes by the competition ensured a happy ending. Sadio Mané (36th minute / 74th) ensured the acclaimed success in front of 10,000 spectators on Anfield. “It was a tough fight. The boys should be so proud of themselves,” said Klopp.
Fulham FC, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United are relegated
Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea were very lucky. With the DFB trio Timo Werner, Antonio Rüdiger and Kai Havertz, the Champions League finalist made a mistake at 1: 2 (0: 1) at Aston Villa, but saved fourth place for the premier class with 67 points. “A defeat never feels good,” said Tuchel. “But tomorrow I’ll be satisfied. We have reached the goal.”
The Chelsea defeat could not use FA Cup winners Leicester City. The Foxes were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur 2: 4 (1: 1) and finished the season with 66 points in fifth. In addition to Leicester, West Ham United (3-0 against Southampton FC) will also take part in the Europa League. Tottenham was able to qualify for the new Conference League thanks to Gareth Bale. The Welshman scored 4-2 in the 87th and sixth minutes of stoppage time and secured seventh place. Harry Kane made it 1-1 and is the best Premier League scorer with 23 goals. Local rivals Arsenal FC (2-0 against Brighton & Hove Albion) missed the international spot in eighth place.
Champions Manchester City easily won against Everton 5-0 (2-0). Runner-up Manchester United won 2-1 (2-1) at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Fulham FC, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United had already been relegated.
