European Football Championship, Group E: Romania starts the tournament with a clear victory against Ukraine

Romania – Ukraine 3:0 (1:0)

The Romanian national football team won its opening match at the European Championships against Ukraine 3-0. In the first match of Group E, Nicușor Stanciu gave the Romanians the lead in Munich with a long-range shot in the first half (29th minute). Ukrainian goalkeeper Andrij Lunin had initiated the Romanian attack himself with a bad pass. After that, Ukraine, which had started the game with a lot of pressure in the first 20 minutes, hardly got out of its own half.

Romania, on the other hand, missed several opportunities to extend their lead in the first half. In the 39th minute, Stanciu almost scored the 2-0 goal from a direct corner, but missed the goal by a few centimeters.

Real Madrid’s Ukrainian goalkeeper Lunin also cut an unfortunate figure when scoring the second goal, failing to save a saveable shot from Răzvan Marin (53′). Just four minutes later, Denis Drăguș (57′) made the decision with his goal to make it 3-0. It was Romania’s second ever victory at a European Championship.

Players and officials of the Ukrainian association had announced that they wanted to send a sign of solidarity to their homeland. The players entered the arena with national flags buttoned around their shoulders. Shortly before the game, legendary striker, association boss and former national player Andriy Shevchenko warned that even in the greatest football euphoria, the war at home should not be forgotten. “Today there are eleven players on the pitch, but millions are fighting for victory at home,” said the 47-year-old.

After the clear defeat in the opening match, Ukraine is already worried about progressing. Coach Serhij Rebrow’s team will play against Slovakia in Stuttgart on Friday on the second matchday. Romania will initially take the lead in Group E and will face Belgium in Cologne on Saturday.
