Lnerves are running high in Australia. And if not, they tell the Romanian Sorana Cirstea, number 72 in the WTA ranking, that this Saturday starred in unusual action in the quarterfinal match of the Grampians Trophy tournament. During one of the breaks, the player went to the chair umpire to request that she issue a ‘warning’ … to her own coach!
As the player explained, her coach, Adrian Cruciat, did not stop giving her instructions and correcting her during the match. So much so that the Romanian said from the chair: “Shut up, shut up!” As the coach kept talking, Cirstea asked the referee for a ‘warning’. “Can you give him a warning? Don’t stop talking. I’ve told him up to ten times to shut up.”
The match judge, with surprise, explained to the player that she would be the one harmed if she warned her coach, so the Romanian did not follow up with such an unusual request.
Cirstea lost the match against American Ann Li, 3-6, 1-6. In the first round of the Australian Open, he will face his compatriot Patricia Tig on Monday.
