The Conquero Basketball Club had already touched glory in the 2015 edition of the Queen’s Cup, falling in the final against Perfumerías Avenida, who achieved his fifth title of that tournament, by a tight score of 66-62 in Torrejón de Ardoz.
A year later, both clubs met again in the decisive match, played this time in San Sebastián. The Huelva team came with doubts due to non-payments to the staff in the preceding weeks, but in sports, he was a real rock on the field of play and a pineapple in the locker room, which ended up giving him the victory, which was the greatest sporting milestone in the history of Huelva basketball.
The first quarter of the match was very tactical and with the two teams respecting each other too much, showing that they knew each other perfectly and exercising strong defenses. Hence the Pyrrhic score of 6-8 favorable to the Salamanca. A 9-0 run in the second quarter put the team led by Gabriel Carrasco on a franchise in front of the pupils of Alberto Miranda (15-8). At halftime CB Conquero left with a four-point advantage (28-24), after a 22-16 part in the second favorable quarter.
A 2-10 partial once again balanced a battle that was presumed to be a heart attack ending and that was to be resolved in the final bars and in detail (38-38, min. 27). A basket in the last gasp of Rosó Buch allowed the Huelva team to end the third quarter with an advantage (48-44, min. 30). The partial in the third quarter was 20-20. María Pina and Caldwell raised the Huelva advantage to seven points when they entered the final stretch (55-48, min. 38). This time the triumph could not be escaped. It was time to pull the veteran and for the party to die with Perfumerías Avenida making fouls. El Conquero knew how to play with temper those last seconds and it became eternal.
A few months later, both the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) and the Andalusian Federation (FAB) and the Huelva institutions and companies did not support the Conquero Basketball Club much, which dropped several categories for economic reasons and could not enroll in the elite. And two years after winning the Copa de la Reina, the team disappeared and most of its players, already from Huelva and from the quarry, they joined other projects such as the Ciudad de Huelva and CB Lepe. For their part, most of the players who won the Queen’s Cup five years ago are still active in teams of the Women’s League or the Women’s League 2. As for Gabriel Carrasco, he coaches Huelva Comercio men’s league EBA and the one that has not been known for a long time is the one who was president in the golden age of the Huelva entity, Rosa Espada.
