Mesut Oezil is at the end of his career with Arsenal. If he was offered to join Tottenham Hotspur, would he accept it?
Oezil just held a question and answer session on his Twitter account on Monday (11/1/2021). The @jimmy_chilides account is known to ask Oezil about this possibility.
Fans are clearly curious. Moreover, Oezil’s future at Arsenal is bleak. He is rumored to be moving from the Emirates Stadium in the January transfer window.
If not, he likely won’t have his contract extended and will be invited to leave in June 2021. Moving to Tottenham is definitely interesting, because Oezil can be reunited with Jose Mourinho.
The two of them worked together at Real Madrid in 2010-2013. Mourinho also brought Oezil to the Santiago Bernabeu after the 2010 World Cup.
However, Oezil holds the principle that once Gooners are still Gooners. He refused to move to Tottenham, even if that was the only offer that came to him.
“Easy question. Retire!” Oezil tweeted, whether he chose to retire or move to Tottenham. So far, the tweet has been retweeted by more than 8,500 people and liked by more than 62 thousand people.
Arsenal and Tottenham, who are both in north London, are famous for their rivalry that has been going on since 1913. A player’s move from Arsenal to Tottenham or vice versa would be labeled traitors.
Even so, that doesn’t mean it never happened. Sol Campbell, William Gallas, and Emanuel Adebayor are examples of this.
If you take it further, Harry Kane also studied at Arsenal when he was still in elementary school, even though he and his family are Tottenham fans and are now known as the captain of The Lilywhites. But that road doesn’t seem to be Mesut Oezil’s choice.
