Robert Lewandowski elected FIFA World Footballer 2020

Robert Lewandowski from FC Bayern Munich has been voted FIFA World Player of the Year. The 32-year-old Pole prevailed against Argentine Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus Turin in the World Association’s vote. The award took place on Thursday evening at a digital gala. Manuel Neuer was honored as the world’s best goalkeeper in 2020, while Hansi Flick missed out on the world coach’s freestyle. The Bayern coach had to admit defeat to Jürgen Klopp by English champions FC Liverpool, who repeated their triumph from last year.

FC Bayern had won the German championship, the DFB Cup and the Champions League title in the past few months. Lewandowski was the top scorer in all three competitions. In addition, the record champions triumphed in the German and European Supercup.

In the vote, the votes of the national coaches and captains of the selection teams of the FIFA member associations, selected journalists and fans from around the world were equally decisive. Elections could be held until December 9th.

Top scorer in all classes

Four professionals who had won the triple with Bayern came into the team of the year: Lewandowski, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Thiago.

The Englishwoman Lucy Bronze, who won the Champions League with Olympique Lyon, was voted World Player of the Year. In the choice of the world goalkeeper, the French Sarah Bouhaddi of Lyon was chosen.
