FC Schalke 04 fires coach Manuel Baum, Huub Stevens takes over

SChalke 04 is apparently reaching for the last straw in the fight against relegation. The bottom of the table in the Bundesliga has allegedly sacked his coach Manuel Baum, the Schalke coach of the century Huub Stevens (67) is to stand in for the last two games of the calendar year. Several media reported unanimously on Friday morning. The association initially did not want to comment on the SID request, not even when asked whether the press conference scheduled for the afternoon is still planned with Manuel Baum. Stevens could not be reached at first.

Allegedly, Stevens, who sits on the Schalke supervisory board, recommended the club to hire the experienced savior Friedhelm Funkel. “I have not yet been approached and do not worry about it,” said Funkel to the SID on Friday. After his engagement at Fortuna Düsseldorf, Funkel had actually declared his coaching career over.

Baum had only taken over Schalke at the end of September from the previously dismissed David Wagner with a contract until mid-2022. An upward trend has not been seen since then. The Royal Blues have been without a win for 28 Bundesliga games, the last success was in January. On Wednesday there was a 0: 2 at home against SC Freiburg, this Saturday Schalke will play in the Bundesliga against cellar rivals Bielefeld, on Tuesday the second DFB Cup round will go to the fourth division club SSV Ulm.
