The players will then move to Melbourne, where they will face a two-week quarantine before the inaugural grand slam of the year due to local measures against the spread of coronavirus. The Australian Open will begin on February 8, three weeks later than originally planned.

From Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the tennis players and their entourage will move to Melbourne on charter flights. After completing the mandatory quarantine, they will be waiting in Melbourne Park from February 1, similarly to men, for two concurrent tournaments Melbourne 1 and Melbourne 2 as a general at the Australian Open. The next smaller WTA tournament will take place in Melbourne in the second week of the inaugural grand slam of the season.

“We are delighted to announce the first part of the tournaments for the opening weeks of the WTA season. All will be held in a way that puts health and safety first,” WTA President Steve Simon said in a statement.

The tournaments in Shenzhen and Auckland, which were to be played from January 6, were dropped from the calendar due to travel restrictions.

According to the recently announced schedule, the tennis season will start with smaller tournaments in Delray Beach, Florida and in Antalya, Turkey. The Australian Open will be played in Doha.
