A new edition of Masters Cup appears on the horizon with the possibility that Rafael Nadal completes the headline tree who commands his exquisite record. The Spanish tennis player apparently arrives fresher than ever for the last date on the calendar, a few ATP Finals which stand for another year at the O2 Arena in London and in which, despite the absence of Roger Federer, a spectacular cast gathers.
In a tournament that has accustomed us to surprises in its last editions, the presence of Novak Djokovic Yes Raphael Nadal in the photo it gives the London Masters a special motivation in itself. Number one and number two have accounts pending after Rafa’s review in the still recent Roland Garros final. While Nole seeks his sixth title of professor, Nadal will try to obtain the first.
However, Nadal and Djokovic are not the only favorites in a more than open tournament. Any uncertainty is justified because of the great state of shape of the two roofs of the circuit. Alexandre Zverev, double champion in Cologne and finalist of the Masters 1000 at Paris-Bercy, shares the second tier of candidates with Daniil Medvedev, precisely his executioner in the final of the tournament in the capital and all assurance in the hard indoor competitions.
He did not leave the best feelings but he is as candidate as the one Dominique Thiem. The Austrian failed to live up to expectations at Roland Garros, and in Vienna he failed to win the title in front of his home crowd, but he arrives in London ready to be crowned on a stage where he was only ‘to a victory tie-break in 2019, but did not do so for the greater precision of Stefanos Tsitsipas, current champion of the ATP finals and, therefore, player to be considered to achieve the maximum.
Finally, and after reviewing the top six rackets of recent times – courtesy Federer – it’s time for the two Masters Cup debutants. Andrey Rublev and his five titles in 2020 deserved a double Russian presence in London, and aspired to reach the semi-finals. More complicated by the type of track it will have an earthy air Diego Schwartzman, who receives the award for the work of many years and will fight, as usual, to become the revelation of the tournament.
